What to do if you get stuck in the elevator

How to act if the elevator stops, what to do, what not to do, and why waiting is safe.

First. Stay calm. An elevator with someone inside can’t fall, the brake system and safety catch mechanism hold it in place.

Second. Press the call button and hold it down. It connects you to the dispatcher or the service provider. If no one answers, call the emergency number posted in the cabin or the stairwell.

What not to do. Don’t try to pry the doors open by hand. Don’t climb out if the cabin has stopped between floors. Don’t crawl through the ceiling hatch. Most serious elevator injuries happen during attempts to escape on your own.

If you feel unwell in the elevator. Say so right away. People with health issues get freed as a priority, and an ambulance gets called.

Why waiting is safe. The cabin has ventilation. There’s enough air.

Afterward. Report the incident to the manager even if everything ended fine. Repeated breakdowns are a sign the equipment needs serious maintenance or an upgrade.
