How to shut off the water in your apartment, something everyone should know

Where the shutoff valves are in your apartment, how to check them, and why it's worth doing today.

Why this is the most important practical tip. The seconds between a pipe bursting and the valve closing decide whether you end up with a wet floor or repairs in three apartments.

Where to look. The valves are usually by the riser pipe, in the bathroom, toilet, or kitchen, behind an inspection hatch or panel. There are usually two, one for cold water and one for hot.

Do this today. Find the valves. Check that they turn. If they’re stuck or painted over along with the pipe, request a replacement. A valve that doesn’t close is as good as no valve at all.

Show your family. Everyone in the household should know where the valves are, not just one person.

If the valve doesn’t work in an emergency. Call the emergency service. They can shut off water for the whole riser pipe.

One more step. If you’re leaving for an extended period, shut off the water in your apartment. It’s a single action that prevents most long-term leaks.
