How to stop strangers' cars from parking in your yard

Four ways to deal with outside cars parking in the building's yard, and what to plan for either way.

First, who owns the land. If the yard belongs to the building, the building has the right to set the rules. If someone else owns the land, the options are different.

Option 1: a sign. A sign stating that parking is reserved for residents of that building. This is the simplest and cheapest option.

Option 2: markings. Clearly marked, numbered spots cut down on chaos even without any physical barriers.

Option 3: a barrier or gate. The most effective option, but also the most expensive, and it needs an agreement on access too.

Option 4: permits. Cards displayed behind the windscreen. This works in small buildings where everyone knows everyone.

What to plan for regardless. Access for ambulances, fire crews and waste collection. Without that, no solution will get approved.

In practice. In a building with an organized parking area, markings and a sign, the problem with outside cars almost disappears. People can see the area is being looked after.
