How to choose an intercom for an apartment building

Three types of intercoms, what to check before choosing, and what people most often forget.

Three basic options. A classic audio intercom with a handset. A video intercom with a screen in the apartment. A system with a smartphone app that lets you answer even when you’re not home.

What to check before choosing. Whether the existing wiring can be reused. If you don’t need to replace the wiring, the job gets much simpler.

Keys or access fobs. Modern systems issue several access fobs per apartment, and a lost one can be disabled in the system.

What to look for. Weather protection, a sturdy panel, the ability to open the door for deliveries, and compatibility with the door closer.

What people often forget. An intercom only works as well as the door and closer it’s attached to. There’s no point installing a modern system on a door that won’t close properly.

Maintenance. Agree upfront on who services the system and how new residents get their access fobs.
