What determines the start of the heating season in an apartment building, why buildings differ, and how to decide it quickly.
General principle. The heating season doesn’t start by the calendar, but by the outdoor temperature. The usual reference point is when the average daily temperature stays around +8 degrees for several days in a row.
Who decides. For a given building, it’s the apartment owners. The manager turns on the heating based on the building’s decision.
What the manager does before the season. The heat substation gets inspected and handed over to the heat supplier for operation. Heating can’t be turned on without this inspection.
Why buildings differ. One building turns on the heating earlier, another later. It’s the building’s decision, not the city’s.
How to decide it easily. A vote in the building chat takes an hour. It’s the fastest way to find out what the majority wants, and it settles the question of “why is it still cold at our place.”
A middle ground. Many buildings turn on the heating at a minimum setting and then adjust it gradually.
