A leaking roof, what to do right away
The first three steps when the roof leaks, how to document it, and why water often shows up far from the actual damage.
Step 1. Report it immediately. A roof leak isn’t something that can wait until tomorrow. Water damages the structure faster than it looks.
Step 2. Protect what you can. Put a container under the leak, cover your belongings, cut power to the affected area.
Step 3. Document it. Photograph the stain and its size, with the date. If the stain grows, that’s important evidence.

The most common causes. Damaged roofing, worn joints around eaves and pipes, a clogged rainwater system, snow and ice buildup.
