Water meters with remote reading, how they work, what they actually deliver, and which buildings benefit most.
How they work. The meter sends its own reading on a set date. There’s nothing to write down, remember, or submit.
Pros. All readings get recorded on the same day, at the same moment, which removes the main cause of discrepancies, human error. There’s no need to let an inspector into the apartment. No worrying about deadlines while you’re on holiday. Manufacturers say these meters last 12 to 16 years, a lifespan set by the internal battery.
Cons. The initial installation costs more than a standard meter, and there’s a small subscription fee for data transmission. If only a few apartments in the building install them, the effect on the overall discrepancy stays limited.
Who benefits most. Buildings where the discrepancy stays consistently high and where some residents routinely fail to submit readings. Also people who are often away from home.
Being honest about expectations. A remote meter doesn’t fix a leak in the riser pipe or repair a dripping tank. It removes only one group of causes, but the most common one.
